What does the operating point mean?
The operating point of magnets is the intersection of the operating line with the demagnetization curve. The operating line is a straight line that passes through the zero point of the diagram and the calculated value of L/D. L/D is the ratio of the length to the diameter of the magnet.
Calculation of L/D:
L/D is calculated by dividing the length of the magnet by the diameter of the magnet. Example: A magnet with a length of 10 mm and a diameter of 5 mm has an L/D ratio of 2.
Reading the operating point:
The operating point indicates the magnetic flux density and magnetic field strength that prevail in the operating state. The magnetic flux density is measured in Tesla (T) and the magnetic field strength in amperes per meter (A/m).
Selecting the operating point:
The operating point should always be in the straight section of the demagnetization curve. If the operating point shifts into the curved area, this can lead to partial demagnetization. This can happen, for example, due to external counterfields or temperature influences, which results in irreversible losses.
Application of the operating point:
The operating point can be used to determine the perfect dimensions for a magnet for different magnet sizes and magnet materials.
